Nothing Serious Here

“Anyone who has ever loved and suffered will find themselves reflected in these radiant pages.”
—Colette G. Kirchhoff, MD, FAAFP, Board Certified Family Physician & Hospice and Palliative Physician

In Nothing Serious Here, Linda Welsh explores the fierce devotion of a daughter accompanying her mother through dementia’s long goodbye. At the fragile edge of memory, these poems chronicle the intimate terrain of caregiving with clarity, compassion, and flashes of wild humor. Moving through kitchens, forests, and the shifting landscapes of the body, they trace the dissolution of familiar roles and the ways love continually reinvents itself.

With an unsentimental eye and a deeply compassionate voice, Welsh bears witness to absurdity, grief, ritual, and unexpected grace as uncertainty becomes a daily companion.

Rooted in the wild beauty of the American West, Nothing Serious Here is a luminous meditation on identity, devotion, and what remains when memory begins to fade. These poems speak to anyone who has accompanied a loved one through illness, aging, or the tender work of letting go.

Linda C. Welsh is the author of Facing the Mountain: Poems on Dying and Death, Caregiving and Hope, and This Strong Mercy: Poems of Collapse and Reimagining. Welsh, a Registered Nurse certified in Hospice and Palliative Care, has decades of experience accompanying individuals through life’s most vulnerable moments. Co-founder of Sage Mountain Center, an education hub for sustainable living in Montana, Welsh is also an eco-builder and master gardener. With a Master’s degree in Transformative Learning and Change, she brings a unique perspective to her writing, blending ecological insight, caregiving wisdom, and a deep reverence for the natural world.

“Raw, elegiac, and at times achingly dreamlike, Welsh juxtaposes the tragedy and heartache of a beloved’s slow-drip disappearance with the absurdities and humor of everyday moments.”
—Cathy Scribner, M.Div. (Yale Divinity School), Hospice Chaplain
