Susette LaFlesche (also called Inshata Theumba “Bright Eyes”) was the oldest daughter of Joseph LaFlesche, the last recognized chief of the Omaha, known as “Iron Eyes.” She grew up on the Omaha Reservation where she attended the Presbyterian Mission Boarding Day School.  LaFlesche became the first Indigenous teacher on the Omaha reservation.

Jane Johnston Schoolcraft or Bamewawagezhikaquay (her Ojibwe name), was born as one of eight children in 1800 in Sault Ste. Marie in today’s state of Michigan, then a cross-cultural hub of British, French, Canadian and Indigenous influence. Only a small number of her poems appeared in a handwritten magazine produced by her husband.
